Irish Sea Crossing by Cumbria Kitesurfers

Well after a couple of years in the planning the team of Cumbrian Kitesurfers have crossed the Irish Sea from Cloghy in Northern Ireland to Silloth.

The crossing took 9 hours and we covered around 110 miles.  It was a real test of endurance, not just physically but mentally also.

The conditions were not brilliant in terms of wind and they were light most of the way so we had to work the kites.

We all made it safely across and landed together.  A superb team effort.  A big thanks to all those involved and our families for supporting us.

On a similar note Sir Richard Branson is attempting to Kitesurf across the English channel with a team of kiters - who just happen to be a bunch of the best kiters in the world and his family.  Yesterdays attempt was aborted due to high winds.

They are attempting it again today - wind looks too light today but tommorow looks epic.

The Crossing and BKSA Round 3 - Walney
Written by Nick Elliott
Sunday, 25 July 2010
Well we are still preparing for the Crossing of the Irish Sea this year and it looks like the July window we set is going to pass without having the ideal conditions.  We have another two week window coming up in August.  Stay tuned to http://www.kitesurfirishsea.co.uk for more information.

We attended the Silloth kite and watersports festival this weekend (Saturday).  Border TV turned up to do a piece on the crossing.  It was on Saturday evening 6:15pm - I need to see how to get the footage on the web as the ITV website only shows the current programme.  I have it on my Sky box but don't fancy tearing the hard drive out to get at it.  If anyone has a DVD recorder that accepts a SCART for me to copy it off that would be cool.

The BKSA Championship Round 4 is at Walney Island again this year.  The dates are the weekend 6th August - 8th August 2010.  If the forecast is good a few of us will be heading down.  The last few years have scored wind on at least some of the days so we'll be watching the forecast.  Always a good opportunity to hook up with the lads down south and ride somewhere different.
